Clay County Hospital has signed a non-binding preliminary agreement to become part of St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Inc. by the end of the year. Terms of the transaction will not be disclosed.
Clay County Hospital is a 22-bed hospital with a 10-member medical staff and 177 health care professionals that have been serving the health care needs of Clay County, Ill., residents for more than 60 years.
Under the agreement, Clay County Hospital would become part of St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Inc. (SMGSI), which includes Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mount Vernon, Ill., and St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia, Ill. Both hospitals are located approximately 45-50 miles from Clay County Hospital. SMGSI is a joint operating agreement between St. Louis-based SSM Health Care and Felician Services, Inc., an international congregation of nearly 2,000 women religious. The hospital is currently owned by Clay County and has been managed by BJC HealthCare, located in St. Louis, Mo. Upon finalization of the agreement, all ownership and management responsibilities will transition to SMGSI.
A partnership with St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Inc. will provide local caregivers and residents with an integrated network of specialty physicians and support services. Clay County Hospital will also benefit from access to the expertise of a national quality award winning organization in an era of rapid industry and regulatory change.
“Clay County Hospital has an excellent reputation for providing high quality care, and we are pleased to join them in serving the residents of Clay County and the surrounding communities,” said Phil Gustafson, Regional President/System Vice President, St. Mary's Good Samaritan, Inc.
"Bringing Clay County Hospital into the SSM Health Care system will allow SSM to extend its health care ministry to a new part of Illinois," said SSM President/CEO William P. Thompson. “Together we will be able to provide quality care within the community that is coordinated and convenient for people.”
Discussions with Clay County Hospital began in late 2012. The preliminary agreement was signed on July 11, 2013.
