(Mt. Vernon, IL) Both Good Samaritan Regional Health Center and St. Mary’s Hospital have been named 2013 Guardian of Excellence Award winners by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. The Guardian of Excellence Award recognizes top-performing facilities that consistently achieved the 95th percentile or better for performance. St. Mary’s Hospital is recognized for patient satisfaction in inpatient care while Good Samaritan Regional Health Center is recognized for physician engagement.
The Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award is a health care industry symbol of achievement. Fewer than 5% of all Press Ganey clients reach this threshold and consistently maintain it for the one year reporting period. According to Barb Paine, Director of Service Excellence for St. Mary’s Good Samaritan, Inc., Press Ganey tools are utilized to drill down and identify survey questions which are most highly correlated to an exceptional patient experience; they are then incorporated into the annual goals in every department. Each department utilizes their Shared Governance team to develop action plans to achieve their goals. Bulletin boards in public areas display goals and are monitored monthly for progress. This past year’s focus has been to improve pain management, medication education, patient rounding with purpose and process improvement within the hospital’s Chronic Disease Management Department regarding patient education and compliance with protocols to reduce readmissions for designated diagnosis.
The Press Ganey award to St. Mary’s Hospital is in addition to eighteen other recognitions received in 2013 from The Joint Commission, AHA McKesson Quest for Quality, JD Power, HealthGrades, and from Premier Quest for Quality. “We understand what matters most to patients when they visit St. Mary’s Hospital; it is high quality, safe, effective care,” said St. Mary’s Hospital President Bruce Merrell. “I appreciate the exceptional medical staff leadership and the great patient care provided by our team of nurses, clinical and support staff.”
